CFO of Facebook, Sheryl Sandberg, Supports the YWCA
Sheryl Sandberg, CFO of Facebook Supports the YWCA Silicon Valley and the USA National branch by donating $1.5 Million dollars.
YWCA’s across the country provide critical necessities to women in crisis by providing emergency shelter, childcare, therapy, legal services along with many other life saving services. The YWCA is a non profit that relies on donations. When the Covid-19 outbreak occurred followed by the Stay at Home order, the shadow pandemic of Domestic Violence creeped in. Domestic Violence soared globally and Women began to turn to the YWCA in record numbers. Women and children are suffering through the Covid-19 pandemic and need help but the YWCA Silicon Valley being dependent on donations began to turn women away due to lack of resources. As YWCA’s began reaching out to donors for extra support, the Sheryl Sandberg and Dave Goldberg Family Foundation stepped up and made a massive donation, $500,000 to her local YWCA, Silicon Valley with the remaining $1 million to YWCA USA.
In a statement, Sandberg said the donation was an acknowledgement of the increased demand for support for abused women and children, particularly those who are already underserved.
The impact is devastating for women, and in particular women of color. We must ensure the critical needs of housing and safety are in place for survivors of violence, and we must seize this moment to fix the structural problems that women face,” Sandberg said. “YWCA is a leader in addressing the intersection of domestic violence and homelessness in our community. Tom and I are proud to give to YWCA to help them provide life-saving resources for survivors who now, more than ever, need a reliable place to turn for help.”
Crosby, CEO of Silicon Valley YWCA notes that the average income of those who seek services is $35,000 or less. It only makes sense, if they could afford to leave and take care of their families, they wouldn’t need to ask for help.
You look at all of those conditions, that’s why this emergency relief grant is so significant,so survivors in this pandemic aren’t faced with a choice between violence and homelessness,” she said. “Financial insecurity is a barrier to safety for survivors. A lack of financial resources is often a reason why survivors don’t leave.”
